Luke 16:19-31

OVERVIEW

A rich man lived in luxury. A beggar  named Lazarus was hungry

and in terrible condition. He would lay begging at the rich man’s

door. The beggar longed for scraps that would fall from the rich

mans table.

The beggar died and was carried to Abraham’s side. The rich

man died and found himself tormented in Hell. The rich man

could look up to see Abraham and Lazarus far away.

The rich man called to Abraham. He begged for Lazarus to be

sent with a damp fingertip to relieve some of his agony. Abraham

reminded the rich man what the situation had been like when the

two had been alive. He explained that a deep chasm was placed

between the two places. No one could go between them.

The rich man then begged Abraham to send Lazarus back to

warn his brothers. Abraham explained that if they didn’t believe

the prophets they wouldn’t believe someone rising from the dead.

V19,20   *Would Jesus have named one of the people involved if

.                  this wasn’t an actual account?

V19         *How extremely wealthy was this man?

V20,21   *How poor and wretched was Lazarus?

V19-21   *Can we assume that these two men had extremely

.                  different stations in life?

V22         *Does it look as if dying and stepping into eternity is as

.                  natural from God’ perspective as walking through a

.                  doorway  is to us?

.               *What would the funerals of these two have been like?

V23         *Does this show us that in eternity we will still be us and

.                  still know each other?

V24         *Is this the same Hell we are shown in Rev 20:10-15?

.               *Does the rich man now become the beggar?

V25         *Does being rich or poor determine our place in eternity?

.               *Was the rich man in Hell because he didn’t help Lazarus?

.               *Is how we handle our resources the problem, or a

.                  symptom of our spiritual condition?

.               *How successful are we judging by appearances?

V26         *Should death be understood as separation?

.               *How are physical and spiritual death each separation?

.               *Can we change our location after we die?

V27,28    *Is part of the rich man’s torment knowing his brothers

.                   are following him?

.                *If the dead lost could come back wouldn’t they be

.                   powerful preachers?

V29-31  *Does the messenger cause someone to repent or is it

.                 someone else?

.              *Who did return from the dead?

Luke 11: 37-52

OVERVIEW

Jesus went to dine with a Pharisee and did not wash before

eating. The Pharisee noticed. Jesus gave several examples

of how Pharisees make a show about being religiously clean

on the outside but filthy rotten to the core inside.

V37       *Could this invitation have been with good motives?

V38       *Was the ceremonial washing a big deal for Pharisees?

.             *Would it be wrong for Jesus to wash?

V39       *Does the inside need to be clean also?

V40,41 *Why does giving to the poor make the inside clean?

V42       *Is it wrong to tithe?

.             *Does 10:27 explain the problem here?

V43       *What about pride?

V44       *Does this sting worse because of Nu 19:16?

V45       *Were the ones Jesus spoke to getting it?

.             *Is this the time to chose repentance or offence?

V46-51 *Does Jesus lean on them harder to make His point?

V46       *Is this how man’s religion works?

V47       *Aren’t these the guys who will push the Romans to

.                crucify Jesus?

V49       *Will these religious leaders kill the disciples?

V50-52 *Could this be a warning for religious leaders today?

V53,54 *Is it still true that people who contend for the faith

.                see much opposition?

The Promise of a Savior Prophecies leading to the birth of Christ

Jacob’s blessing said that Jesus would come from the tribe of Judah Gen 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. Why did Jesus come out of Judah?

Balaam prophesized that a star would point the way to the King of the Jews  Num 24:17  I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth. What was the Star of Bethlehem?

Moses spoke of Jesus when he retold the laws concerning the Levites. Deu 18:15  “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers–it is to him you shall listen— How will the promised Messiah be like Moses?

Isaiah prophesized that Jesus would be born of a virgin and that He would be God. Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Why was Jesus born to Mary the virgin?

Isaiah prophesized God, in the form of His Son, would give to the world what it needed most. Isa 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isa 9:7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. Do these words describe the baby Jesus and His earthly ministry?

Isaiah prophesized that Jesus would be born from the family lineage of King David. Isa 11:1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. Isa 11:2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. Isa 11:3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear Why did Jesus descend from King David?

Micah prophesized that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem. Mic 5:2  But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. What event caused Jesus to be born in Bethlehem, and why was He born at this time? What does the birth of Christ mean to us?

Luke 11: 29-36

OVERVIEW

Jesus said that this wicked generation will not be given

a miraculous sign except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah was

a sign to the Ninevites the son of man is to this generation.

The queen of the south and the men of Nineveh will

condemn this generation because one greater is here.

A light is placed on a stand so it can be seen. When eyes

are good the body is full of light. If eyes are bad the body

is full of darkness. Make sure the light in you is not darkness.

If your whole body is full of light it will be like a lamp

shinning on you.

                      Also Mt 12: 39-42

V29       *Did the crowd come only to see a sign?

.             *What is the sign of Jonah (Jonah 1: 17)?

.             *Did Jonah die in the fish?

V30       *How will the Son of Man be this sign?

.             *Was Jonah’s purpose to point to Jesus?

V31       *What about the Queen of the South (1Kings10)?

V32       *Why will the men of Ninevih condemn this generation?

V31,32 *Were these examples using foreigners especially

.                tough for the Jews?

V33        *What person and event is the light?

V33,34  *Why does a person without a light have the same

.                 problem as a blind person?

.              *Why was Jesus not being seen?

V35        *Is it important to evaluate our relationship with Jesus?

V36        *Do we need a sign to know the sun is there?

.              *If we close our eyes is the sun gone?

V29-36  *How would the Ninevites talk about us?

Luke 11: 14-28

Luke 11: 14-28

OVERVIEW

Jesus drove out of a man a mute demon. Some in the

crowd accused Jesus of driving the demon out by Satan’s

power. If Satan’s kingdom is divided how can it stand.

Jesus also asked by who’s power do your followers drive

demons out. If Jesus drives demons out by  the finger of

God the kingdom of God has come.

A strong man can guard his house until a stronger man

takes away his armor. He not with Me is against Me. He

who doesn’t gather scatters.

An evil spirit who leaves and finds no rest will return

with 7 more evil spirits. The final condition of the man is

worse.

Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey.

           Also (Matthew 12: 24-30 & Mark 3: 22-30)

V14-16  *Were the Pharisees trying to discredit miracles

.                 done by Jesus? Why?

V17-20  *Did Jesus highlight how absurd the question was?

V20        *Was the Kingdom present in the person of Jesus?

.              *Is Jesus referring to Exodus 8:19?

V21,22  *Looking at v14 & 20 could the strong man be Satan?

.              *Is his own house the world?

.              *Is the demon possessed man Satan’s possession?

.              *Could the someone stronger be Jesus?

.              *Isn’t it Christ’s victory when someone is saved?

V24-26  *Is it important that this demon wasn’t cast out?

.              *If someone quits doing a sin doesn’t he feel good?

.              *If someone cleans up his life doesn’t he feel good?

.              *Is there a difference between being swept and washed?

.              *How terrible is it to do “well ”or “clean up our act”

.                  without being born again?

.              *Do we know someone living a good life without

.                  knowing Jesus?

V23        *Looking at v24-26 could this be things like self

.                 help programs or “religious” programs?

V27,28  *Was this woman as well as others in the crowd

.                  impressed by Jesus?

.              *Why does Jesus down play this earthly relationship?

.              *Can we all be blessed for more important reason?
